Introduction and objective: Some epidemiological studies have recognised an association between lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and erectile dysfunction (ED). We aimed to evaluate the occurrence of a correlation between LUTS assessing tools and ED in men who came to the clinic for a routine control.
Material and Method:105 middle-aged men who consulted at the Instituto Médico Especializado (IME) in Argentina for a routine urologic control signed an inform consent to be evaluated for LUTS and ED. Thus, they were performed a transrectal ultrasonography, an uroflowmetry measuring urine flow/sec (Qx) and two self-administered questionnaires, the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) for LUTS and Personal Assessement – Sexual Function Inventory (PAS-SFI) for erectile function. Mann-Whitney test was used for the statistical analysis and a p value inferior to 0.05 was considered significant.
Results: All patients completed the assessment. Table 1 shows the results.
*ED was mild, moderate and severe in 45.2%, 23.2% and 31,5 % of the cases, respectively.
Conclusion: In our series, only the IPSS correlated with a major incidence of ED.
Key words: Erectile dysfunction, LUTS
